Lindsey Graham’s Early Life and Political Career

Lindsey Olin Graham was born in Central, South Carolina to Millie Walters [4] and Florence James Graham[5]. His parents ran a restaurant/pool/bar/liquor store called the Sanitary Cafe[6]. He is of both Scottish and Irish descent. 

Lindsey Graham graduated from D.W. Daniel High School[7] and became the first member of his family to attend college. He joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps[8]. 

His mother passed away when he was 21 of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 52. 15 months later, his father passed away of a heart attack aged 69. Following this, he became his sister’s legal guardian. Due to this he was allowed to stay at the University of South Carolina in Columbia by the service[9]. 

During his time at the university, he became a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity[10]. In 1977, he graduated with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology[11]. He then attended the University of South Carolina School of Law. He got his J.D. there in 1981[12]. 

In 1982 he was commissioned as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG Corps) in the US Air Force[13]. He became an Air Force defense attorney and was transferred to Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany in 1984[14]. He served there till 1988. He returned to South Carolina in 1989 and entered private practice as a lawyer[15]. 

During this time, he also served as the Oconee County Assistant County Attorney from 1988 to 1992[16]. He also served as the city Attorney for his home town Central from 1990 to 1994. 

In 1998, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel[17]. In 2004, he received a promotion to colonel in the US Air Force Reserve at a White House Ceremony[18]. He served as a reservist in Iraq in 2007 for a very short period in April and for 2 weeks in August[19]. He served in Afghanistan during the August 2009 Senate Recess[20]. 

Lindsey Graham’s Political Career

Graham’s first ever political race was for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District after Butler Derrick retired in 1994[21]. Senator Strom Thurmond campaigned on his behalf and he won the Republican Primary unopposed with 52% of the vote. Graham then defeated Democratic State Senator James Bryan Jr. 60% to 40% [22]. 

Graham first ran for Senate election in 2002 when US Senator of South Carolina Strom Thurmond retired. Graham won the Republican Primary unopposed and defeated Democratic nominee Alex Sanders[23]. 

As a result, he became South Carolina’s first new Senator since 1965. He served as the state’s junior Senator for only 2 years alongside Democrat Ernest Hollings until he retired in 2005[24]. 

He ran for a second term in 2008 and won by 57.53%[25]. He won a third term in 2014 by 54% of the vote[26]. He won a fourth term in 2020 with 54.4% of the vote[27].

He notably called Candidate Trump a “jackass” for saying his friend John McCain was “not a war hero.[29]” He followed up by calling Donald Trump a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” after Trump had called for a ban on Muslims[30]. 

However, after Donald Trump became president, he became supportive. He went as far as to say that he would support Donald Trump’s re-election in 2020[31]. 

Graham was one of the Republicans who promoted the conspiracy theory that the 2020 Presidential Election was stolen[32], though he later recanted. Graham also voted against investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riots[33].
