Mike Lee’s Bio/Early Life

Mike Lee was born on 4th June 1971. He was born in Mesa, Arizona. But he spent his childhood in Provo, Utah.

Lee has Swiss, Danish, and English ancestry. His father Rex E. Lee served as the Assistant US Attorney General from 1975 to 1976. Moreover, his father also served as the US Solicitor General from 1981 to 1985.

In 1989, Lee completed his high school degree from Timpview High School. He obtained his BA in political science degree from Brigham Young University in 1994. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the same college in 1997.

Lee married Sharon Burr in 1993. The couple has three children.

Mike Lee Career

Lee worked as a clerk for two years after completing his law degree. He worked for Judges Dee Benson and Samuel Alito in Utah. In 1999, Lee joined law firm Sidley Austin focusing on Supreme Court litigation and appellate.

From 2005 to 2006, Lee served as the general counsel to the Governor of Utah, Jon M. Huntsman Jr. He then worked as a clerk for Judge Alito again before joining law firm Howrey LLP.

In 2010, Lee campaigned for the United States Senate position from Utah. He won the primary election defeating rival Tim Bridgewater by a close margin. In the general election, Lee defeated Sam Granto of the Democratic party.

Lee won the 2016 US Senate election. A number of conservative organizations endorsed him, including the Club for Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

He defeated Democratic nominee Misty Snow in the general election by a clear margin. He became the dean of the congressional delegation of Utah after winning the election.

Lee endorsed Roy Moore in the special election runoff for the U.S. Attorney General. 

From 2019 to 2021, Lee was the chair of the Joint Economic Committee.

Lee has a conservative stance similar to most Republicans. He was ranked the most conservative member of the Senate by the New York Times in 2017.[x-1]

Lee endorsed Donald Trump (R) in the 2020 presidential election. He even compared President Trump to Captain Moroni, a heroic figure in the Book of Mormon, on October 28, 2020.

He is a critic of environmentalists. Along with 22 other Republican senators, Lee pressed on President Trump to reject the Paris Agreement. He has also rejected scientific evidence regarding climate change stating that it is a cheap ploy for public relations.

Lee opposes a carbon tax to combat climate change. During his sarcastic speech on the Senate floor, Lee said the solution to climate change is to replace airplanes with Star Wars animals from Hoth and giant seahorses. 

Lee is also opposed to LGBT rights. He criticized the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for supporting same-sex marriage in Costa Rica. In 2019, he also attacked the Equality Act saying that it divides communities.

Lee voted against creating an independent commission to investigate the riot on May 28, 2021.
