John Randolph Thune was born on January 7th, 1961, in Pierre, South Dakota, USA. His parents were Harold Richard Thune and Yvonne Patricia [3]. Harold Thune flew a fighter aircraft for the Pacific theater when John was young. Harold Thune has another son named Richard Thune, who is an English Teacher in California.

John Thune participated in many sports in his youth and was part of the high school basketball team at the Jones County High School. He later attended Biola University, where he also played basketball [4]. 

John Thune graduated from Biola University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business in 1983. He then studied at the famous University of South Dakota. Thune graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1984 and earned a Master of Business Administration degree.

Political Career

John Thune began his political career shortly after graduating from the University of South Dakota. Between 1985 and 1987, Thune served as the legislative aide to Senator James Abdnor. Abdnor was elected after defeating Senator George McGovern in the 1980 Senate election.

John Thune returned to Pierre in 1989 and began serving as the executive director for the State Republican Party [5]. Thune then served as the executive director for the South Dakota Municipal League between 1993 and 1996.

John Thune ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. He defeated sitting Lieutenant Governor of Rapid City Carole Hillard in the primary. Thune defeated Democrat Rick Weiland in the general election [6]. Thune was re-elected to the House in 1998 and 2000, winning with a wide margin each time.

John Thune made his initial run for the U.S. Senate in 2002. He challenged Democratic Senator Tim Johnson but lost by a mere 0.15% of the vote.
