John Randolph Thune was born on January 7th, 1961, in Pierre, South Dakota, USA. His parents were Harold Richard Thune and Yvonne Patricia [3]. John Thune participated in many sports in his youth and was part of the high school basketball team at the Jones County High School. He later attended Biola University, where he also played basketball [4].

Political Career
John Thune began his political career shortly after graduating from the University of South Dakota. Between 1985 and 1987, Thune served as the legislative aide to Senator James Abdnor. Abdnor was elected after defeating Senator George McGovern in the 1980 Senate election.
