Dianne Feinstein’s Bio/Early Life

Dianne Feinstein was born Dianne Emiel Goldman in San Francisco, CA on 22nd June 1933. She was born to Jewish parents who had migrated from Poland. She attended Covent of the Sacred Heart High School. In 1955, she obtained a BA in Arts degree from Stanford University.

Feinstein had married three times. Her first husband was Jack Berman whom she married in 1956. They had a daughter named Katherine. She and Berman separated in 1959. Her second husband was neurosurgeon Bertram Feinstein whom she married in 1962. He died of colon cancer in 1978.

In 1980, Feinstein married an investment banker Richard C. Blum.

Dianne Feinstein Career

Feinstein’s political career started in 1960 when she was appointed to the Women Parole Board. From 1969 to 1978, Feinstein served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. 

In 1971, Feinstein ran for the Mayor’s office but lost the election. She again ran for the post in 1975 and lost by just one percentage to John Barbagelata.

Feinstein was an outspoken critic of the anti-capitalist terrorist group – the New World Liberation Front (NWLF). The group tried to assassinate her two times during the 1970s. In 1976, a bomb was placed near the window of her home that did not explode. Later, someone shot from the windows of her beach house but she was not hurt. 

After the assassination of San Francisco mayor George Moscone in 1978, Feinstein became the acting mayor. The city’s Board of Supervisors appointed her as the mayor the same year. She was the mayor of the city for ten years from 1978 to 1988.

In 1990, Feinstein ran for governor of California. She had won the Democratic nomination but lost to Republican Pete Wilson.

Feinstein ran for the Senate seat that became vacant after Wilson resigned to run for the governor’s position. She won the Senate election in 1992 defeating Republican Gray Davis. Feinstein was reelected in subsequent senate elections from San Francisco.

Dianne Feinstein Accomplishments

Feinstein was the first female mayor of San Francisco. She was awarded the ‘Most Effective Mayor’ award by City and State magazine in 1987.  

At the present, she is the oldest US senator who is still serving. Additionally, she is also the longest-serving senator from California.

Feinstein was fined for not reporting about campaign contributions when she ran for the governor in 1990. She was asked to pay $190,000.
