John Wright Hickenlooper Jr. was born on February 7th, 1952, in the city of Narberth in Pennsylvania. His parents were John and Anne Wright Hickenlooper [5]. He is the cousin of deceased filmmaker George Hickenlooper.
The current Senator studied English at Wesleyan University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1974. He then studied geology at Wesleyan and graduated with a Master’s degree in 1980.
John Hickenlooper Career
After receiving his Geology degree, Senator Hickenlooper moved the Denver, Colorado, and found a job with Buckhorn Petroleum. In 1988, he founded Wynkoop Brewing Company along with entrepreneurs Mark Schiffler and Jerry Williams.
The Senator’s foray into politics began when he ran for the position of Denver mayor in 2003. He managed to beat city auditor Donald Mares in the mayoral race despite possessing no background in politics.
As mayor, Hickenlooper sought to reduce Denver’s sizable city deficit and address its homeless problem. He was re-elected as Denver mayor in 2007.
In 2010, the Senator began campaigning for the position of Colorado’s Governor. He won the election by managing to secure 51% of the vote, beating former congressman Tom Tancredo.
