Richard Blumenthal was born in New York City, NY on 13th February 1946. He was born to a Jewish father Martin Blumenthal who immigrated to the US from Frankfurt, Germany. His mother Jane was from Omaha Nebraska. He has one brother David Blumenthal who is a doctor and president of the US Commonwealth Fund.

Blumenthal attended Riverdale Country School in Bronx, New York. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in Arts. 

In 1973, Blumenthal received a J.D. law degree from Yale Law School where his classmates included future 46th President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton.

He married Cynthia Malkin in 1982. His wife is the daughter of the New York real estate tycoon Peter L. Malkin. His wealth is derived in large part from his wife.[6]

Blumenthal served in the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1970. He served in the military from 1970 to 1976 attaining the sergeant rank.

Richard Blumenthal Career

Richard Blumenthal worked as a partner in the law firm Cummings and Lockwood and later Golub & Sandak. He was appointed the US Attorney for Connecticut in 1977 and retained the position till 1981.

In 1985, Blumenthal’s political career started when he won Connecticut’s 145th district House of Representatives seat. Two years later, he became the senate majority leader from the 27th district Connecticut State Senate.

In 1991, Blumenthal was elected as the Attorney General of Connecticut. In 2010, Blumenthal ran for the 112th Congress Senate seat from Connecticut and won the election. He became a senior senator in 2013 after the retirement of  Joe Liberman.

Blumenthal was re-elected in 2016 becoming the first person in the history of Connecticut to win the Senate seat with more than 1 million votes.

In 2002, Richard Blumenthal received the Raymond E. Baldwin Award for Public Service. The award was given by the Quinnipiac University School of Law for his contributions to the public service field.

Sen. Blumenthal voted for and spearheaded the Defending Integrity of Voting Systems Act in 2019. The bill passed in Congress in 2020. It was introduced as a federal government law to protect the digital voting system from fraud and abuse.

Blumenthal made a lot of achievements while serving as Connecticut’s Attorney General. He spearheaded the multi-billion dollar lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
