Chris Murphy was born on 3rd August 1973 in West Plains, New York. His parents Scott L. Murphy and Catherine A. are of Irish and Polish descent. They moved to Connecticut when he was a child. His father was the managing partner of a Hartford law firm Shipman & Goodwin while his mother worked as an ESL teacher in Hanmer Elementary School located in Wethersfield, Connecticut.
Murphy attended Wethersfield High School. He received a BA in law from Williams College and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He has also received an honorary Doctor Humane Letters degree from the University of New Haven in 2013.

Murphy worked as a campaign manager for Charlotte Koskoff who ran against Nancy Johnson in 1996.
