Chris Murphy was born on 3rd August 1973 in West Plains, New York. His parents Scott L. Murphy and Catherine A. are of Irish and Polish descent.[3] They moved to Connecticut when he was a child. His father was the managing partner of a Hartford law firm Shipman & Goodwin while his mother worked as an ESL teacher in Hanmer Elementary School located in Wethersfield, Connecticut.
Murphy attended Wethersfield High School. He received a BA in law from Williams College and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He has also received an honorary Doctor Humane Letters degree from the University of New Haven in 2013.
