Jon Ossoff’s Early Life and Career

Jon Ossoff is an American Politician serving from Georgia. Ossoff defeated David Perdue for his seat. 

He was born on February 16, 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently serves as the youngest United States Senator. He was previously a documentary film producer and an investigative journalist. 

He is the descendant of European pogrom survivors[8]. His mother is an Australian immigrant from Sydney and his father was raised in Northlake. He grew up amongst Holocaust Survivors which imbued in him a conviction to fight for the marginalized.He previously held Australian Citizenship through his mother[9].

His father Richard Ossoff owned a specialist publishing company called Strafford Publications.. 

He attended the Paideia School in Atlanta and graduated high school from there[10]. He also interned for U.S. Representative John Lewis who was a civil rights leader[11]. He got a recommendation from John Lewis after his internship and worked as a National Security Staffer as well as a Legislative Assistant for Foreign Affairs[12]. He held this position from 2007 to 2012. 

He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree[13]. There, he attended classes taught by former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as well as former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren[14]. 

After his Bachelor’s Education, he attended the London School of Economics in 2013, where he got his Master’s in Science Degree[15]. After his graduation from the London School of Economics, he stayed in the UK. From 2013 to 2021, Ossoff led from the managing director position and CEO of Insight TWI[16]. He was also the co founder. 

Insight TWI is a London-Based Investigative Television Production Company which creates documentaries about corruption in foreign countries[17]. This was where Ossoff built up his net worth. This was a career akin to his father’s publishing company tenure.

American Politician Ossoff first ran for political office in 2017[20]. He announced his candidacy for a special election on January 5, 2017 for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. He ran for that seat after Tom Price vacated the seat to become the Secretary of Health and Human Services. He was endorsed for his seat by John Lewis and Hank Johnson. He also received public support from Senator Bernie Sanders and managed to raise $8.3 million by April of that year. 

In total, the combined spending in the campaign came to $55 million[21]. This became the most expensive House election in US History. He lost the race for the 6th District of Georgia against Republican candidate Karen Handel. 

He won the Democratic Primary Election. Ossoff ran as a moderate. He beat the other Democratic challengers. Ossoff ran for office again in 2021 to unseat Senator David Perdue, the incumbent Republican Senator[22]. He was announced as the Democratic Nominee with the approval of then Presidential Candidate Joe Biden after. The State had been a Republican Stronghold for more than 15 years. Only Republicans had won the Senate here until Senator David Perdue lost. 

He advanced to the general election by winning 50.5% of the vote. This was just over the threshold to prevent a run-off election. Ossoff raised over $100 million for his campaign[23], which made his campaign the most well-funded Senate race in U.S. History. Most of his donations came from small-dollar donors nationwide. The election generated national attention. 

Ossoff won the Senate Election by a small margin. He managed to counter the Republican Strategy in the general election and secure a new seat. His win, along with that of fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock, allowed him to secure a tie in the Senate. Now, there is a complete balance between the Republicans and the Democrats. However, with Democratic Party Vice President Kamala Harris as the Senate President, the Democrats have the deciding vote. 

As a Jewish Senator, he is only one of 10 who reside in the governing body. He is also the youngest member of the governing body.  

Raphael Warnock and Ossoff became the newly elected Senators. With his support, the Democrats and Republicans are evenly divided in the Senate. Vice President Kamala Harris as the deciding tie breaking vote. 

Jon announced recently that he’s throwing his support behind Democrat Lucy Mcbath from Georgia’s 6th Congressional District for the next general election.

He broke national fundraising records for a U.S. House of Representatives Candidate. His campaign raised more than $23 million. Two-thirds of that was contributed by small donors nationwide. 

He has also championed the cause of pay equality[24]. In June of 2021, he led the charge to end pay discrimination against women in Georgia, and across the country. He led a bipartisan Senate vote to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act which would strengthen the already in place Equal Pay Act of 1963. He has also thrown his support behind Lucy Mcbath in a bid to elect women in a greater ratio in to Congress. 

He is also the first Jewish Senator from Georgia.

He holds controversial opinions on Abortion. He has stated that he is pro-choice on abortion rights which makes his incredibly controversial amongst nearly half the population in the United States[25]. 

He also holds controversial views on Cannabis legalization. He is pro-legalization and regulation of cannabis[26]. Ossoff announced he promises to push for nationwide legalization of cannabis which he considers much less dangerous than alcohol.
