Michael Dean Crapo was born on May 20th, 1951, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA. His parents are George Lavelle Crapo and Melba Crapo. His family contains a rich history of politicians.
Michael Crapo is the first cousin four times removed of Michigan Governor Henry Howland Crapo, who served from 1865 to 1869 [5]. His brother Terry Crapo served in the House of Representatives for Idaho from 1966 to 1972
Michael Crapo then studied at Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1973. He married his current wife Susan Diane Hasleton in 1974. Michael Crapo then studied at Harvard Law School and earned a Juris Doctorate in 1977.

Crapo notably served as acting Governor of Idaho for a period of 12 hours when Idaho Governor Cecil D. Andrus testified before Congress in January 1989.
Sen. Crapo was elected as President of the Idaho Senate in 1988 after Senate President pro tempore Jim Risch lost his reelection bid. Sen. Crapo then worked as Senate President Pro Tempore between 1988 and 1992.
Sen. Crapo continued his involvement in Idaho politics after being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998. He gained the seat left by Republican Dirk Kempthorne, who was running for governor at the time.
