Mike Crapo Bio/Early Life

Michael Dean Crapo was born on May 20th, 1951, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA. His parents are George Lavelle Crapo and Melba Crapo. His family contains a rich history of politicians.

Michael Crapo is the first cousin four times removed of Michigan Governor Henry Howland Crapo, who served from 1865 to 1869 [5]. He is also a descendant of William Crapo Durant, who co-founded General Motors. The young Crapo attended Idaho Falls High School and graduated in 1969. His brother Terry Crapo served in the House of Representatives for Idaho from 1966 to 1972

Michael Crapo then studied at Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1973. He married his current wife Susan Diane Hasleton in 1974. Michael Crapo then studied at Harvard Law School and earned a Juris Doctorate in 1977.

After finishing law school, Michael Crapo worked as a law clerk for Judge James M. Carter, who was positioned on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The young Crapo then joined his brother’s law firm, Holden Kidwell Hahn Crapo, and began practicing as a lawyer.

Political Career

Sen. Crapo became involved with the Republican Party’s campaigns to win seats in the state legislature in the 1980s. He ran for an open Idaho Senate seat in 1982 after the death of his brother Terry Crapo. Crapo was elected in 1984. Sen. Crapo served in this role until 1992. Sen. Crapo notably served as acting Governor of Idaho for a period of 12 hours when Idaho Governor Cecil D. Andrus testified before Congress in January 1989. 

Sen. Crapo was elected as President of the Idaho Senate in 1988 after Senate President pro tempore Jim Risch lost his reelection bid. Sen. Crapo then worked as Senate President Pro Tempore between 1988 and 1992.

Sen. Crapo continued his involvement in Idaho politics after being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998. He gained the seat left by Republican Dirk Kempthorne, who was running for governor at the time. Crapo was elected to the U.S. Senate once again in 2004 with a landslide of 99.2% of the vote, beating Democratic candidate Scott McClure. Democrat Scott McClure was a write-in candidate at the time and could not compete with Crapo’s campaign.

Crapo ran for U.S. Senate reelection in 2010 and defeated Democratic nominee Jerry Sturgill with 71% of the vote. Crapo was elected again in 2016 when he defeated Democratic nominee Jerry Sturgill with 66% of the vote.

Crapo has held many conservative positions as Senator. He opposes abortion [6] and supported a key 1998 bill that made it illegal for minors seeking an abortion to cross state lines for the procedure. He also voted against providing the UN with funding for population control policies in 2009.

Crapo called for more support for nuclear energy initiatives and has shown interest in nuclear energy projects based at the Idaho National Laboratory. The Idaho Senator has also supported pro-nuclear Senate bills such as the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act (NEIMA) and the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act (NEICA). He also co-chairs the Senate Nuclear Caucus. 

Senator Mike Crapo Accomplishments 

Sen. Crapo has many accomplishments as Senator. He successfully helped stop a bill that was aimed at expanding background checks for gun buyers in 2013 [7].

Sen. Crapo was also one of the Senators who signed the letter to President Donald Trump urging him to withdraw from the Paris Agreement [8].

The NRA praised Crapo for his pro-gun views during his Senate bid in 2010. They publicly expressed their support as Crapo was elected.

Senator Mike Crapo Controversies

Sen. Crapo has been embroiled in many controversies since starting his political career. In 2018, a liberal watchdog group filed a complaint against the Idaho Senator, stating that he did not report payment for using a condo in his campaign filings [9].

Sen. Crapo was also arrested for drunk driving in 2012. Sen. Crapo pleaded guilty and paid a $250 fine and had his license suspended for one year following the incident [10].
