Joni Kay Ernst was born on July 1st, 1970, in Montgomery County, Iowa, USA. She is the daughter of Richard Culver and Marilyn Culver.
The young Ernst grew up on her parents’ farm near Red Oak, Southwest Iowa. She attended Stanton Community School District high school and was valedictorian prior to graduating.
Ernst then attended Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1992. She also studied at Columbus college and received a Master’s degree. The young Iowan joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) while at Iowa State University. She then married Army Major Gail Ernst [5].
Ernst joined the US Army Reserves and served in Kuwait and Iraq as a company command officer between 2003 and 2011. Ernst then served as a commanding office with the Iowa Army National Guard. Following her service with the Iowa Army National Guard, Ernst worked as Montgomery county auditor from 2005 to 2011.
Political Career
Near the start of her political career, Ernst was elected to the Iowa State Senate as a Republican under a special election in 2011. After serving in the Iowa State Senate, the Senator ran for the United States Senate in 2014, citing her experience in politics and growing up on a farm as making her qualified for the Iowa seat. She won the election, making her Iowa’s newest Senator since Tom Harkin.
Senator Ernst notably campaigned on the notion of abolishing the Energy Protection Agency and the US Department of Education. She also aimed to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
