Mazie Hirono’s Bio/Early Life

Mazie Hirono’s date of birth is 3rd November 1947. She is a second-generation Asian American immigrant.  Her place of birth is Fukushima Prefecture in Japan.

Laura Chie Sato and Hirono Malabe were her parents. They lived in Japan before World War II. The couple had three children – Roy, Mazie, and Wayne. Mazie did not have any sisters.

Her parents had separated in 1951. Initially, her mother who was a Japanese American lived with the three children after separation in Japan. But in 1955 the family moved to Hawaii. They became naturalized American citizens in 1959 when Hawaii became the 50th US state.

She attended Kaimuki High School. She completed her BA in psychology Manao in Hawaii. In 1978, she obtained a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

After graduating she returned to Hawaii to practice law. She married Leighton Kim Oshima in 1987.

In 2017, Hirono was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. Her right kidney was removed as a result.

Hirono published an autobiography titled Heart of Fire: An Immigrant Daughter’s Story in 2021. The book was listed by the French-British international magazine Marie Claire among the 25 Great Memoirs to Pre-Order Now.

Mazie Hirono Career

Hirono first won the 12th District of Hawaii election in 1980. She won the 20th, 22nd, and 32nd House district elections.

In 1994, Hirono ran for the Lieutenant Governor post and won. In the Democratic primary, she had defeated State Representative Jackie Young. In the general elections, she defeated Fred Hemmings of the Republican Party.

Hirono ran for re-election for Hawaii’s Lt. Governor post in 1998. She had defeated Republican StateSenator Stan Koki by a close margin.

She ran for the 2nd congressional district seat in 2006. Her opposition during the election was Republican Senator Bob Hogue. She won the Senate election for the second term in 2008 and 2010.

In 2012, she won the United States Senate election in Hawaii. She defeated Republican Linda Lingle with 62-37 percent. She ran for the same position in 2018 defeating Republican Ron Curtis with an even bigger margin of 71-28 percent. She is currently serving the Senator position of Hawaii along with Brian Schutz.

Mazie Hirono Accomplishments

Hirono is the first Asian American woman elected to the Senate. She is also the first female Buddhist Senator in the US. 

During her tenure at the Hawaii House of Representatives, she passed hundreds and twenty laws. She won the Legislator of the Year award in 1984.

Hirono played a major role in introducing the detailed Pre-Plus program. The program influenced the development of universal preschool education in the US.

In 2021, Hirono sponsored a bill to decrease hate crimes against Asian Americans. The bill was passed with a majority vote.
