Brian Schatz’s Bio/Early Life

Brian Schatz was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on 30th October 1972. His parents were both Jewish. His father Irwin Jacob Schatz was a notable cardiologist from Boniface, Manitoba. He has three brothers. One of his brothers is his twin named Steve.

Irwin Schatz was one of the few individuals who had strongly complained against the Tuskegee experiment. In 1965, Irwin Schatz wrote a letter highlighting the incident. It was the attitude of his father that inspired Schatz to commit to the public good.

In 1974, his father along with the family moved to Hawaii. Schatz enrolled in Punahou School. In 1994, Schatz graduated with a BA in philosophy degree from Pomona College in Claremont.

Schatz taught at Pomona for some years. He later returned to Hawaii and taught at Punahou. He had served as the executive director of Hawaii P-Partnerships for Education. The firm works for the promotion of education in partnership with the University of Hawaii.

He married Linda Kwok Kai Yun. The couple has two children and live in a Hawaii house. 

Brian Schatz Career

Schatz’s political career started in 1998 when he ran against Republican Sam Aiona. He won the 24th House district elections in 1998 as well as 2000.

Schatz won the Hawaii House of Representative elections. He defeated republican bill Hols in 2002, and republican Tracy Okubo in 2004. He ran for the 2nd District of Hawaii in 2006 but lost the election.

Schatz worked as the Democratic Party of Hawaii chairman in 2008 and held the post till 2010. During his tenure, Hawaii native Obama won the state election defeating Democratic nominee John Kerry. 

He was appointed as a lieutenant governor of Hawaii on 6th December 2010.  In 2012, he was appointed as a senior senator from Hawaii. Schatz is only the second senator from Hawaii who is not Asian-American.

Schatz announced his intention to run for the Senate seat again in 2014. Schatz challenged fellow Democratic candidate Colleen Hanabusa in the elections. He won the election with a majority vote of about 70 percent. 

In 2016, Schatz again ran for the Senate elections. He won the election for a further six-year term.

He was one of the senators who were participating in the certification of the presidential election when Trump supporters stormed the building in 2021. He called for the impeachment of the then-president stating that he was a danger to democracy.

Brian Schatz Accomplishments

Brian Schatz has served as the CEO of the non-profit firm Helping Hands in Hawaii. He has also worked as a director of the Center for a Sustainable Future. He served in the CEO/director role until 2010 when he ran for the lieutenant governor role.

The League of Conservation Voters had given Schatz a perfect score. He is popular among conservationists for his support for climate change activists. He has supported the carbon tax and the Green New deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the 112th Congress, Schatz holds the distinction of being the youngest US Senator.

Schatz is also one of the three Democrats who serve on the Senate Ethics Committee. The committee also includes three Republican Party members. It looks at allegations and complaints against a senator or staffer who displays disorderly behavior such as fraud, sexual harassment, or other actions.

Brian Schatz Controversy

Schatz’s appointment as lieutenant governor of Hawaii in 2010 generated a lot of controversies.[3] The incumbent lieutenant governor late Daniel Inouye had instructed to appoint Colleen Hanabusa after his death. But Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Schatz for the post that attracted a lot of criticism.
