Tom Cotton’s Bio/Early Life

Tom Cotton was born on 13th May 1977 in Dardanelle, Arkansas. His father was Thomas Leonard Cotton who worked as a district supervisor of the Arkansas health department. His mother was Avin Cotton who served as the district’s middle school principal.

Cotton’s family owned a farm in rural Arkansas. His early days were spent on the family’s cattle farm. He attended Dardanelle High School, and graduated from the school in 1995. 

Cotton attended Harvard University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1998. He was part of the editorial board of  Harvard Crimson. He often criticized the liberal majority in his articles.

In 1999, Cotton enrolled in Claremont Graduate University in a master’s program. But he dropped from the program as he found academic life too sedentary. He  joined Harvard Law School and got his JD law degree in 2002.

Tom Cotton Career

Cotton worked as a federal clerk for judge Jerry Edwin Smith of the United States Court of Appeal after graduating. He later joined Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in Washington DC.

In 2005, Cotton enlisted in the United States  Army. He served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Fort Myer. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, and various other awards.

After being honorably discharged from the US Army in 2009, Cotton joined the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. But he soon left the company and returned to Dardanelle to work on his family farm.

Cotton ran for the 4th congressional district senate seat for Arkansas in 2012. He won the election representing the Republican party by defeating state senator  Gene Jeffress.  He again won the US Senate elections in 2014 and 2020.

Tom Cotton Accomplishments

Senator Tom Cotton led a bill in the Senate to end the penalty for not paying for Obamacare. The provision to repeal the Obamacare mandate The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was successfully passed in 2017.[3] Millions of Americans no longer have to pay IRS tax penalties for not buying insurance.

Senator Cotton had also introduced the Preserving Access to Cost Effective Drugs (PACED) Act in 2018.[4] The bill that was passed in Congress gives power to the federal courts, Patent and Trade Office, and International Trade Commission to prevent abuse of patent laws by pharmaceutical companies.

Tom Cotton Controversy

Tom Cotton had falsely claimed in campaign ad videos shot between 2011 and 2014 that he had earned a Bronze Star in the Ranger Regiment of the US Army. But a news site named Solon reported that Cotton never served in the Ranger Regiment.[5] 

In 2015, Cotton along with other Republicans wrote a letter to Iran casting doubt on the nuclear arms deal between President Obama and Iran. The letter that was written by Cotton could constitute a violation of the Logan Act.[6]
