Roger Wicker’s Bio/Early Life

Roger Wicker was born Roger Frederick Wickre on 5th July 1951. His place of birth is Pontotoc, Mississippi. He is the son of Thomas Frederick Wicker and Wordna Glen.

Wicker graduated from the University of Mississippi. He obtained a Juris Doctor degree and also a BA in political science and journalism. While studying at the university, he became a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa for his meritorious academic record.

In 1975, Wicker married Gayle Long. They have three children and live in Tupelo in Lee County, Mississippi.

Roger Wicker Career

Wicker’s political career started in 1967 when he worked for the Democratic Representative Jamie L. Whitten as a US House of Representative Page in 1967. He served the United States Airforce between 1976 and 1980.

In 1980, Wicker became a US Airforce Reserve member and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2003.

Republican Trent Lot hired Wicker in 1980 to be part of his House Rules Committee counsel. 

In 1987, Wicker contested for the Mississippi state senate position representing the Republican party. He won the election and continued to represent the 6th district until 1994.

Wicker ran for the 1st District United States Congressional election in 1994. In the Republican primary, Wicker defeated Fox.  He won the election defeating Democratic Fulton attorney Bill Wheeler by a clear majority. In 2004, Wicker again won the election defeating Barbara Dale Washer. He won the 1st district elections in 2006 as well as defeating democratic rival Ken Hurt.

In the 2008 United States special election, Wicker defeated Ronnie Musgrove. He took part in the US Senate election in 2012 from Mississippi. In the election, he conclusively defeated Democratic rival, Albert Gore.

Senator Wickers was appointed chair of the national Republican senatorial committee in 2015. He worked for the committee until 2017. Wicker served Senate Armed Services committee as well. 

Wicker subsequently won the 2018 US Senate election from Mississippi. He defeated Democratic rival, David Baria. He is a deputy republican whip as of 2021. 

Roger Wicker Accomplishments

Wicker has won a total of six general elections with over 65 percent majority. He won in 2004 defeating Democratic Barbara DaleWasher with a 79.01 percent majority. [3]

Sen. Wicker was awarded the Maritime Champion award in 2021. [4] He was given the award for his work on improving ports and waterways. This award was presented to him by the National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE).

Roger Wicker Controversy

Sen. Roger Wicker received a lot of criticism for his remarks on a nuclear attack on Russia. He said that the President ‘shouldn’t rule out nukes’ against Russia. [6]
