Richard Burr was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 30, 1955. He is the son of Martha Burr and pastor David Horace White Burr [5].  His lineage can be traced back to Aaron Burr, who was the third US vice president and migrated to North Carolina with his family. 

Richard Burr went to Richard J Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He would go on to attend Wake Forest University in 1978 and earn a BA. In college, Richard Burr was known for his admirable leadership skills and excellence in sports. 

He played football for his university’s team called the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

After college,  Richard burr would work as a sales manager for a wholesale lawn equipment company. He is married to his wife Brooke Fauth Burr with two children [6].

Richard Burr stayed out of politics until 1992 when he decided to run for the US House of Representatives. This was his first foray into politics, and as expected, ended in failure. However, Richard Burr was strong and resolute and only two years later in 1994, he would re-enter the race and win. 

After his successful election into office, Richard Burr would go on to win the election four times. He proved to be so popular with his constituents that he collected over 62 percent of votes every time. 

Richard Burr had his eyes set on the United States senate and when John Edwards vacated his position as a senator, he capitalized and ran for the recently vacated seat. Richard Burr started his career as a senator for the very first time in 2005.

Richard Burr is mostly known for his moderate views on politics and leans towards conservative values in some key issues. Like most Republicans, Richard Burr pledged to not increase taxes and voiced his support for the balanced-budget amendment. 

He went against his Republican colleagues by voting to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” bill, which prohibited gay people from serving in the United States military.  

As part of the Senate intelligence committee, Burr was part of an investigation that Russia allegedly interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Burr’s team generated a report and supported the view that Russia had indeed meddled in US affairs. 

Burr voted against a measure that would restrict President Donald Trump from initiating military action on Iran without approval from Congress. 

In 2010, Burr would renew his candidacy as a North Carolina senator and defeated his Democratic opposition Elaine Marshall. Burr ran for the senate and defeated Democratic Congresswoman Deborah Ross in 2016, making him the winner of the senate election.
