Bob Menendez’s Bio/Early Life

Bob Menendez was born Robert Menendez on 1st January 1954. He was the son of Cuban immigrants, Mario and Evangelina Menendez. His parents had migrated from Cuba some before his birth.

Mario Menendez worked as a carpenter. His mother Evangelina worked as a seamstress. The family lived in Union City in New Jersey.

He studied at Union Hill High School. In 1972, Menendez graduated from Saint Peter’s College with a BA degree in political science. He enrolled in Rutgers Law School completing a Juris Doctor degree in 1979.

Menendez married Jane Jacobsen in 1976. They have two children together. The couple divorced in 2005. Menendez married for the second time in 2020 to Nadine Arslanian. They live in Harrison in Hudson County in New Jersey. [3]

Bob Menendez Career

Bob Menendez’s political career started in 1982. He contested for the post of New Jersey City Mayor during that year but lost to Musto. In 1986, he again contested for mayor and won the election. Musto’s popularity had waned after he was found guilty of corruption and Menendez had testified against him.

In 1987, he won the General Assembly election representing New Jersey’s 33rd district. Menendez was elected from the district along with Bernard Kenny Jr. He continued to hold both Mayor and New Jersey Assembly posts until 1991.

Menendez contested for the 33rd State Senate election in 1991 from New Jersey. He won the election by a clear majority defeating rival Republican Carlos Munoz.

In 1992, Menendez contested for the 13 congressional districts from New Jersey. He was successful in the election defeating Republican Fred J. Theemling Jr. Menendez got reelected in the 1994 election defeating Fernando A. Alonso of the Republican party.

Menendez won New Jersey’s senate elections in 1996 and 1998 defeating rivals Carlos E. Munoz and Theresa de Leon, respectively. He again defeated rival Republican Theresa de Leon in the 2000 elections.

Mendez contested for senate elections in 2002, 2004, 2012, and 2018. He was successful in all of them defeating rival Republicans by a clear majority of votes.

Bob Menendez Accomplishments

Sen. Bob Menendez was honored by the renaming of a public school in his name. In 2013, West New York was renamed Public School No. 3 located in New Jersey to Robert Menendez Elementary School. [4]

In 2021, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou awarded the highest civilian honor to Sen. Bob Menendez [5]. He received the Grand Cross of the Order of Honor for his efforts in strengthening Greek-US ties.

During the same year, Sen. Bob Menendez was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III by the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiades [6].
