Sasse started his career as an associate consultant with Boston Consulting Group. He would later advise the US Department of Homeland Security on national security issues. Sasse served as the Assistant Secretary for Planning and evaluation for the US Department of Health and Human Service. 

Sasse served as the 15th president of Midland Lutheran College (later known as Midland University). He was among the youngest chief executives to take leadership of the century-old institution. His grandfather, Elmer Sasse worked for Midland University for 33 years. Elmer Sasse worked as vice president of Finance at Midland University.

During his tenure as president of Midland University, college enrolment nearly doubled. It also recovered from the various financial and academic difficulties under Sasse’s leadership. Sasse also hired the faculty of the nearby Dana college and allowed most of their students to transfer to Midland University, thereby averting a great catastrophe. 

He taught at the University of Texas-Austin while still serving as the President of Nebraska’s Midland University. 

Ben Sasse aimed to run for politics and pursue the U.S. senate. He resigned from his post in 2014 as president of Midland University.

After announcing his intentions to run for the U.S. Senate, Ben Sasse was up against Mike Johanns. 

A key issue for Sasse was the ACA. Sasse expressed strong opposition to the Affordable Care Act and had to prove his points in a nail-biting debate with Shane Osborn, his primary opposition. Osborn tried to derail the campaign by criticizing speeches Sasse delivered while the bill was being passed [6]. 

Sasse managed to win 92 of 93 counties, a big feat indeed. Sasse won the nomination from the Republican Party with 49.4% of all votes. Ben Sasse would later win the general election by defeating David Domina, the Democratic nominee. 

Ben Sasse proved his mettle in politics once again in the 2020 election by defeating Chris Janicek from the Democratic party. He received 62.7% of the total votes to become Junior United States Senator.

Sasse was among very few of his colleagues from the Republican Party when he blamed Donald Trump for the attack on Capitol hill. Trump retaliated by calling Sasse a RINO (Republican In Name Only). He was a target of a few Twitter posts by Trump until the account was later banned. 

Ben Sasse Controversy

Ben Sasse has enjoyed a mostly controversial-free political career with the exception of the brief tussle with Donald Trump. He sided with the Democratic party by blaming Donald Trump for the assault on Capitol Hill. 

Sasse mentioned that Trump had disregarded his oath of office and would consider impeaching him if given the opportunity.

He was one of six other Republican senators to vote to convict Trump for the assault on Capitol Hill.
