Jean Shaheen was born (January 28, 1947) Cynthia Jeanne Bowers in St. Charles, Missouri. She is the daughter of Ivan E. Bowers and Belle Ernestine. She is a descendant of Pocahontas, a popular Native American .
Her father managed a shoe factory and her mother was a secretary in a local church. Despite these humble origins, Jeanne Shaheen had lofty ambitions and wanted to become an entrepreneur. She attended Shippensburg State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1969. She then attended the University of Mississippi and taught at a high school.
