Maggie Hassan’s Early Life 

Maggie Hassan was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 27, 1958.  Her father, Robert Coldwell Wood, was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he taught political science. Robert was appointed as an undersecretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson. 

Maggie Hassan went to Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Massachusetts. She then went to Brown University to major in history and earn a Bachelor’s degree. 

Hassan would find her husband, Thomas Hassan who was a student at Brown University. In 1985, she earned a Juris Doctor from the Northeastern University School. 

Hassan has two siblings, including Frank Wood, an actor who also won a Tony award [5].

Maggie Hassan started her career as an attorney after she graduated from Northeastern University School of Law. She worked for Palmer & Dodge. She served as associate general counsel for a hospital from 1993 to 1996.

From 1996 onwards, Hassanw ould work as a lawyer for Sullivan, Weinstein & McQuay, a business law firm that specialized in corporate defense. Her first foray into politics began in 1999 when she was appointed as a citizen advisor to the Advisory Committee, appointed by Governor Jeanne Shaheen. 

This was a valuable learning experience for Hassan and she decided to put her skills to the test by running for the New Hampshire Senate. She would lose to Republican incumbent Russel Prescott in a very tight race. Hassan’s campaign for the New Hampshire senate may have failed in a failure but it gave many republican senators a run for their money. 

Confident that she would win the New Hampshire Senate, Hassan campaigned against Prescott for the second time and defeated him in a very competitive race. Hassan’s next opponent was Natalie Healy but soundly defeated her in 2006 by a 20 percent margin. She would defeat Lee Quandt in 2008 by a close margin.

Prescott wrestled control of the New Hampshire Senate from Hassan in November 2010, again with a very close margin of 14 percent. This allowed the Republicans to gain control of both the state Senate and state House. 

Hassan had a successful tenure as governor of New Hampshire. She won the Democratic primary with the majority of the vote by defeating Jacalyn Cilley. Hassan was endorsed by former president Bill Clinton and ran on important themes such as the Affordable Care Act.
