Senator Thom Tillis Bio/Early Life

Thomas Roland Tillis was born on August 30th, 1960, in Jacksonville, Florida. His parents were Thomas Raymond Tillis and Margie Tillis [3]. Thom was the oldest of six children in his family.

The Tillis family frequently moved while Thom was still a child. He had moved over twenty times by the age of 17 and never spent more than one year in each of the schools he attended.

Thom Tillis graduated from high school in 1978 and went on to study at the Chattanooga State Community College. He then attended the University of Maryland University College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in technology management in 1996 [4].

Professional Career

Thom Tillis began working at the Chattanooga insurance company Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co. after high school. His job involved computerizing records for a computer company called Wang Laboratories in Boston. Wang eventually hired Tillis to work for them at their Boston office.

Tillis started working for a consulting firm called Price Waterhouse in 1990. He was promoted to the position of partner in 1996 before moving to Cornelius, North Carolina, with his family in 1998. The company sold its consulting division to IBM in 2002. This eventually led to Tillis working at IBM.

Political Career

Tillis’ initial outing into politics occurred when he ran for the position of Cornelius town commissioner in 2002. Tillis tied for second place and served a two-year term [5]. 

In 2006, Tillis ran for a seat in the General Assembly. He managed to defeat Republican John W. Rhodes in the primary and won the election. He was re-elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2008, 2010, and 2012. 

During his time with the North Carolina House of Representatives, Tillis helped restructure the state’s tax code [6]. He also helped redraw the different congressional districts in North Carolina. Tillis supported legislation to reduce early voting days and change ID requirements for voters.

After many productive terms in the North Carolina House, Tillis announced he would be leaving to seek a seat in the national Senate. He eyed the seat held by Democrat Kay Hagan. Tillis won the Republican primary by earning 45.7% of the vote. He then narrowly won the Senate race by securing 48.8% of the vote [7]. Senator Tillis then ran for re-election in 2020 and won with 48.7% of the vote.

Senator Tillis Accomplishments

Senator Tillis accomplished many things as a member of the North Carolina House and the United States Senate. He helped the Republicans win a House majority in North Carolina. This was the first majority in North Carolina history since 1998.

Senator Tillis also worked with Democrats on immigration reform and created legislation to protect Robert Mueller.

Senator Tillis was among the 36 Senators who signed a letter to President Trump, urging him to hold onto the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Senator Tillis Criticisms

Senator Tillis was criticized in 2014 after protestors were arrested for staging a sit-in at his office. The protestors opposed the North Carolina Junior Senator’s move to cut earned income tax credits and his reluctance to expand Medicaid. [8]
