Kevin Cramer was born Kevin John Cramer on 21st January 1961. He was one of five children of Richard Cramer and Clarice Hjelden. His place of birth is Kindred in North Dakota.

Cramer studied at Kindred High School. In 1983, he graduated from Concordia College located in Moorhead, Minnesota. He completed his Master’s degree from the University of Bismark, North Dakota.

In 1986, Cramer married Kris Cramer. The couple has five children together. One of their sons Isaac died in 2018 due to alcohol addiction.

Kevin Cramer Career

Kevin Cramer’s political career started in 1984 when he worked for Republican Scott Hove. He was elected as the chairman of the Republican Party in 1991 when he was 30 years old. Cramer served as the chairman of the company until 1993.

In 1993, Republican governor Ed Schafer appointed Cramer state tourism director. He also endorsed Cramer for the Economic Development Director post that he served from 1997 until 2000.

Cramer served as the Harold Schafer Leadership Foundation director between 2000 and 2003. In 2004, he was elected for the Public Service Commission post defeating Ron Gumeringer. He was reelected in 2010 when he defeated Brad Crabtree of the Democratic Party.

Cramer campaigned for the United States House of Representatives seat from North Dakota in 1996 and 1998. He was defeated both times by democratic nominee Earl Pomeroy.

In 2010, Cramer again contested for the US House of Representatives from North Dakota. But he lost to Rick Berg in the Republican nomination election. Cramer ran for the post a fourth time in 2012 after the retirement of Berg. This time around he was successful in defeating Democratic Pam Gulleson with a clear majority.

Cramer won reelection in the 2014 and 2016 elections defeating Democratic nominees George B. Sinner and Chase Iron Eyes, respectively.

In 2018, Cramer announced that he would run for the 2018 U.S Senate election in North Dakota. He won endorsement from the Republican Party and raised $1.35 million for the campaign. [3]

Sen. Cramer served as the North Dakota Republican Party Chairman from 1991 to 1993. At age 30, he was the youngest party chairman. [4]

Cramer has sponsored two bills during his tenure that were passed in both houses. He introduced a bill in 2013 to modify the Energy Policy Act of 2015. He proposed changes in the Federal Permit Streamlining Pilot Project offices in Montana and Wyoming.

He had also proposed a bill in 2013 to rename Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center in Fargo, North Dakota. His proposal to rename the center to Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center was passed by the 115th Congress in 2017.
