Early Life and Career

Senator Warnock was born in Savannah Georgia on July 23, 1969. He grew up in Kayton Homes public housing community as the 11th of 12 children of Verlene and Jonathan Warnock[5]. His parents were both Pentecostal pastors[6].

His father served in the US Army during World War II [7]. There, his father also learned automobile mechanics and welding. There, he opened a small car restoration business to restore old cars for resale[8].

The young Warnock graduated from Sol. C. Johnson High School[9]. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther King Jr., and so attended Morehouse College[10]. He graduated cum laude in 1991 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology[11].

He enrolled in early college courses through Savannah State University[12]. He also earned a Master’s Degree of Divinity, Master’s Degree in Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University’s school of Union Theological Seminary[13].

He also worked in a religious capacity before and after graduation. He served as a youth pastor and assistant pastor at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York[14]. He was also a senior pastor at a community church in Baltimore, Maryland[15].

He also became a senior pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia in 2005[16]. This is Martin Luther King, Jr.s former congregation. In July of 2020, he presided at Representative John Lewis’ funeral at the Church[17].

Political Career

He first came to political prominence in Georgia when he organized a sit-in at Georgia State Capitol[18]. He pressed state legislators to accept the expansion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He was arrested with other leaders.

In 2015, he opted not to run for the United States Senate Seat held by Johnny Isakson for the Democratic Party.

Warnock chaired the New Georgia Project from 2017 to 2020 to increase voter registration[19]. He supported the expansion of the Affordable Care Act[20].

In January 2020, Warnock decided to run in the 2020 US senate election against billionaire Kelly Loeffler. He was endorsed by Chuck Schumer, Cory Booker, and Kirsten Gillibrand among others (see FAQ). He defeated Loeffler by 51% of the vote.

He has announced that he will run again in 2022 for a full term[21].

Achievements

He became the fifth, and youngest person to serve at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta[22], Georgia as a senior pastor since its founding. He continues to be the senior pastor while serving in the Senate.

He then became the first Black Senator from Georgia[23].

Don’t forget he won the Senate seat from billionaire Kelly Loeffler.

Controversies

While he was at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York, the Church controversially hosted Fidel Castro on October 22, 1995. However, there’s no evidence that the decision involved him. During his 2020-2021 campaign for the United States Senate Special Election, the campaign refused to say whether he attended the event or not[24].

While at the Douglas Memorial Community Church, he and an assistant minister were arrested[25]. They were charged with obstructing a police investigation into child abuse at a summer camp. The camp was run by Warnock’s Church. Warnock was called “extremely uncooperative and disruptive” by the police.
