Maria Cantwell was born on October 13th, 1959, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is the daughter of Paul Cantwell and Rose Cantwell. As a child, Maria lived in a predominantly Irish American neighborhood. Her father, Paul, served as City councilor and as chief of staff for Representative Andrew Jacobs Jr.

Cantwell completed her high school education at Emmerich Manual High School. She then pursued higher education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration [3].

Political Career

Following her graduation, Cantwell moved to Seattle. She then campaigned for U.S. Senator Alan Cranston, who had made a bid for a Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984. Following this, Cranston moved to a Seattle Suburb and helped build a library in the area.

Maria Cantwell ran for the Washington State House of Representatives in 1986. Cantwell defeated George Dahlquist with 54% of the vote, making her one of the youngest members of the Washington House [4]. She was then re-elected in 1988 and 1990.

Cantwell ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1992 and managed to beat Republican Senator Gary A. Nelson [5]. She ran for re-election in 1994. However, she was defeated by Republican Rick White. While Cantwell served her one term as a House representative, she helped convince the Clinton Administration to stop pursuing the Clipper chip.
