John Anthony Barrasso was born on July 21st, 1952, in Reading, Pennsylvania. His parents were John Anthony Barrasso Jr and Louise M. Barrasso. 

Barrasso attended Central Catholic High School and graduated in 1970. He then studied at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before transferring to Georgetown University. Barrasso graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. 

John Barrasso then studied at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He graduated with an M.D. degree in 1978. He then performed his residency in New Haven, Connecticut, at Yale Medical School.

John Barrasso moved to Wyoming in 1983 and joined a private orthopedic practice in the city of Casper [3]. He worked as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon from 1983 to 2007. 

Barrasso served as State President for the Wyoming Medical Society and as President for the National Association of Physician Broadcasters. Barrasso was also a prominent member of the American Medical Association Council of Ethics and Judicial Affairs. 

Barrasso worked as a rodeo physician with the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association.

Political Career

John Barrasso made his way into politics after running for the U.S. Senate in 1996 under a Republican nomination. He eyed the seat being vacated by Republican Alan K. Simpson. Barrasso was defeated by Senator Mike Enzi in a close nine candidate election [4].

Barrasso ran for the Wyoming Senate in 2002 and won unopposed [5]. He was also reelected unopposed. As a Wyoming Senate member, chaired the Transportation and Highways Committee [6].

John Barrasso was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2007 by Governor Dave Freudenthal. He replaced incumbent Craig L. Thomas who passed away in June of that year. Freudenthal chose Barrasso from three Republican Candidates.

Senator Barrasso ran for the general election in 2008. No one faced Barrasso in the Republican primary. The lack of a primary opponent earned him the Republican nomination. He then faced Democratic nominee Nick Carter in the general election and defeated him with 73% of the vote.
