Cynthia Lummis’s Bio/Early Life

Cynthia Lummis was born on 10th September 1954. She is from Cheyenne, Wyoming. Her parents Enid Bennett and Doran Lummis were descendants of German immigrants. Her father had served as the Laramie county Republican party chairman. 

Doran Lummis served as the Republican Party chairman of Laramie county in Wyoming. He was also a member of the board of commissioners of the county. Del Lummis is her brother who had also served as the county chairman of the Republican Party.

Lummis completed her high school degree from Cheyenne East High School. In 1976, she earned a BS degree in animal science from the University of Wyoming. She received her BS in biology from the same university in 1978.

In 1985, Lummis completed her Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the University of Wyoming. She was included in the dean’s list for her academic achievements.

Lummis married Alvin Wiedersphan in 1983. Her husband was an attorney and politician representing the Democratic party. He had served as the House of Representatives member from Wyoming from 1979 to 1984. From 1985 to 1988, Wiedersphan served as the Wyoming U.S senator.

Her husband died in 2014. They have only one child, Annaliese.

Cynthia Lummis Career

Cynthia Lummis worked as a school teacher when she was studying in 1977. She left her position after being elected to the House of Representatives from Wyoming in 1978.

She was re-elected to the House in 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992.

In 1992, Lummis contested for the Wyoming Senate seat from the 5th district. She defeated incumbent Harriet Elizabeth Byrd of the Democratic Party.

Lummis did not seek reelection in 1998. She was succeeded by Republican nominee Don Lawler.  

In 1998, Lummis contested for the treasurer position. She defeated both republican and democratic opponents. In the general election, she defeated Libertarian nominee James Blomquist and Democratic nominee Charyl Loveridge.

Lummis sought reelection for the treasurer position in 2002. She was re-elected unopposed in both the republican primary and the general election. She did not face any opposition since no other candidate got the 25 write-in votes.

During the 2002 US House elections, Lummis initially supported a recount of the ballot cast  in Natrona County. The results determined the county that secured the first position in the ballot. 

Lummis voted unanimously alongside other members of the Wyoming Canvassing Board for a recall of the votes in the county. But she changed her mind after the clerk told her that all of the votes were counted. 

In 2005, Lummis had supported US House speaker John Boehner. But the Freedom Caucus successfully pushed for his removal in 2005. Lummis unsuccessfully sought to replace Senator Craig L. Thomas as the US Secretary of State. 

Lummis decided to contest for the 2008 US House of Representatives seat. The seat was left vacant after the retirement of Republican Barbara Cubin. Lummis won the general election defeating Democratic Gary Trauner. She was reelected in the 2010 defeating Liberatian nominee John V. Love and Democratic nominee David Wendt. 

Lummis won the 2012 elections defeating Chris Henrichsen who had won the Democratic primary. She also won the 2014 elections defeating Democratic nominee Richard Grayson. After the death of her husband in 2014, Lummis announced she would not seek a fifth term.  

Lummis served on the whip team of the Republican Party. But she was removed from the position after she voted against giving authority to President Barack Obama for proposing a trade agreement with Pacific countries.

She contested for the United States Senate position from Wyoming in 2020. She won the general election by defeating Democratic Merav Ben David.
