Joshua David Hawley Biography

Joshua David Hawley was born in Springdale, Arkansas on December 31, 1979. His father, Ronald Hawley is a banker and his mother, Virginia Hawley is a teacher. The family moved to Lexington in Missouri when Ronald joined Boatmen’s Bancshares.

Josh Hawley went to Lexington Middle School and Rockhurst High School, a private prep school in Missouri. He graduated as a valedictorian in 1998 . He was a very charismatic child and displayed leadership qualities at an early age. Many of his teachers thought he would become president one day.

Josh Hawley was a prolific writer and author for the Lexington News, his high school newspaper. He displayed a tenacity for politics from an early age because many of his journalistic endeavors included topics such as the American militia movement and the coverage of Mark Fuhrman, a detective at the Los Angeles Police Department.

He would pursue history at Stanford University. His mother also studied at the same university. Josh Hawley would graduate from Stanford University with the highest honors and membership to Phi Beta Kappa. His biggest mentor at Stanford University was David Kennedy, who would contribute to Hawley’s book, “Theodore Roosevelt: A Preacher of Righteousness”.

According to Kennedy, Hawley was the most gifted student he ever taught at Stanford University.

Josh would later intern at St Paul’s School in London from 2002 to 2003 and returned to the United States to attend Yale Law School. He has been described as a religious conservative and politically ambitious. While at Yale Law School, Hawley edited for the Yale Law School.

Before starting his career, Haley worked as an appellate litigator at Hogan & Hartson for three years. He provided legal advice in the Supreme Court Cases School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Senator and Former Attorney General Josh Hawley

Josh Hawley’s first real foray into politics started when he launched his campaign for becoming the Attorney General of Missouri. He was elected in the Republican Primary and later won the general elections. Hawley served as Attorney General from 2017 to 2019 and threw his weight behind 20 other Republican Attorney Generals to oppose the Affordable Care Act.

A key aspect of Josh Hawler’s career as an AG is the death of Tory Sanders. Sanders had mental health disorders that caused deputies to arrest him. Sanders resisted because the deputies had no grounds for holding him. Sanders was tasered and pepper-sprayed throughout the day and later died due to cardiac arrest. This caused a huge uproar and the public demanded justice.

Hawley ruled that the assault on Sanders was not the cause of his death and didn’t file murder charges. This led to widespread criticism from lawmakers in Missouri as the death of George Floyd rekindled the public’s interest in Sander’s case.

Hawley had his sights on bigger goals and formed a campaign committee for the US Senate. He would declare candidacy for the US Senate Elections in 2017 – his opponent would be Claire McCaskill.

President Donald Trump gave his endorsement to Hawley and that may have tipped the scales in his favor. Hawley was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats alike for starting his Senate campaign only a year after being sworn in as an attorney general.

Hawley’s most famous (or infamous) moment as a US senator came on January 6, 2021, when the US Capitol was stormed. Hawley would give a raised fist to protestors outside the Capitol.

Hawley also lent his voice to object to the electoral votes for Pennsylvania and Arizona, making claims that the officials violated state election laws. All of these acts raised Josh Hawley’s public profile and could further his political aspirations.
