Joe Manchin was born in Farmington on 24th August 1947. He was the son of John and Mary O. Manchin. His father and mother had Italian and Czech ancestry, respectively.

Manchin’s grandfather and father had served as the mayor of Farmington. One of his uncles was A.J. Manchin who had served as West Virginia’s Secretary of State, House of Delegates member, and Treasurer. 

In 1965, Manchin graduated from Farmington High School. He obtained a business administration degree from West Virginia University.

Manchin married Gayle Heather Conelly in 1967. The couple has three children. His daughter Heather Manchin Bresch was the first woman to serve as the CEO of a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company.[3]

Joe Manchin Career

Manchin worked for his family business after graduating with a business degree. He founded Enersystems brokerage in 1988. He passed control of the company to his son Joseph after winning the United States Senate election.

His political career started in 1982 when he became a member of West Virginia’s House of Delegates. In 1986, he won the election of the West Virginia Senate.

Manchin resigned from his state’s senate position in 1996 to run for the governor position. But he lost the primaries to Democrat Charlotte Pritt.

In 2000, Manchin was appointed West Virginia’s Secretary of State. He contested for the state’s governor position again in 2003. This time he won the primary and the general election. It was the first time in the history of West Virginia for a governor to succeed another governor belonging to the same party.

Manchin contested the United States Senate election in West Virginia in 2010. He contested for the Senate seat after the death of incumbent Robert Byrd. In the general election, Manchin defeated rival Republican John Raese.

Manchin won the US senate seat for the second term in 2012. He defeated Raese again with a clear majority.

In 2018, Raese defended his seat by winning the primary and general elections. He defeated Attorney General of West Virginia General Patrick Morrisey by a narrow margin.

Manchin is a close friend of former president George W. Bush, whom he knows from his days as Governor of Texas.
