Jim Inhofe’s Bio/Early Life

Jim Inhofe was born James Mountain Inhofe on 17th November in 1934. His place of birth is Des Moines, Iowa. He was the son of Perry Dyson Inhofe and Blanche.

Inhofe spent most of his childhood in Tulsa in Oklahoma. He attended Tulsa Central High School. In 1973, Inhofe graduated from the University of Tulsa with a BA in economics.

Between 1956 and 1958, he served in the United States Army with the rank of Specialist 4. He married Kay Kirkpatrick in 1959.

Jim Inhofe Career

Jim Inhofe worked in the real estate and insurance sector after graduation. He served as the Vice President of the Quaker Life Insurance company in the 1980s.

Inhofe entered politics in the mid-1960s working for the Republican Party. He was a member of the House of Representatives of Oklahoma in 1967. In 1969, Inhofe became a member of the Oklahoma Senate. He contested for the governor of Oklahoma in 1974 but lost to Democratic David Boren.

In 1976, Inhofe contested for the 1st Congressional district from Oklahoma. He won the primaries defeating Republicans Frank Keating and Mary Warner. But he lost the election to Democratic James R. Jones.

Inhofe ran for mayor of Tulsa in 1978. He won the election defeating Democrat Rodger Randle. He got reelected in 1980 and 1982. 

In 1986, Inhofe contested for the 1st District U.S House of Representative position. He received the most votes in the Republican primary. In the general elections, he defeated Democratic Party representative Gary Allison. Inhofe was reelected in 1988 when he defeated Democrat Kurt Glassco. He defeated Glassco again in the 1990 election. In 1992, Inhofe again won the 1st District seat with a majority vote.

Inhofe ran for the senator position for the first time in 1994. He won the election succeeding Senator David Boren who had vacated his seat. In 1996, Inhofe won his first full-term by defeating Democratic rival Jim Boren.

He contested for the senate position again in 2002. He was successful in the general election defeating the Democratic party’s David Walters. 

In the 2008 US Senate election in Oklahoma, Inhofe defeated Andrew Rice of the Democratic party. Inhofe again contested for the US Senate election in 2014. He defeated Democratic rival Matt Silverstein in the general election by a clear majority.

In 2018, Inhofe served as the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee after the death of John McCain.

In the 2020 senate elections, Inhofe won by a majority of votes defeating rival Abby Broyles of the Democratic party. He announced he would not seek reelection at the end of his term in 2027.

Jim Inhofe was awarded the Character and Leadership Award by the US Air Force Academy. The award was given in 2013 in recognition of his exemplary character and leadership in personal, professional, and public service.[3]

During his initial political career, Jim Inhofe had reported that he graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1959. But it was revealed during the 1994 campaign that he had graduated in 1973 when he was 39 years old. Inhofe initially denied the discrepancy, but later acknowledged it as true.[4]
