Jack Reed was born John Francis Reed on 12th November 1949. He was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island. His parents include Joseph Anthony Reed and Mary Louise.
Reed attended St. Matthew’s Elementary School in Cranston, RI. He completed his High School degree from La Salle Academy in Providence, RI.
In 1971, Reed received a Bachelor of Science degree from United States Military Academy located at West Point, NY. Jack Reed received a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1978.

Reed joined the United States Army after graduating from the US Military Academy in 1971. He had served as the Platoon Leader, Battalion Staff Officer, and Company Commander.

Reed’s political career started in 1990. He contested for the 2nd District United States House of Representatives election in Rhode Island. Reed defeated Republican Gertrude Coxe. He was reelected in 1992 and 1994 US House of Representative elections.
In 1996, Reed ran for the U.S. Senator seat from Rhode Island. He contested for the seat after the retirement of fellow Democrat Claiborne Pell. Reed won the Democratic primary with a large majority of 86 percent. He also won the Senate general election defeating Republican Nancy Mayer.
In 2002, Reed contested for the reelection of the Senate seat from Rhode Island. He won the election defeating Robert G. Tingle of the Democratic party. In the 2008 US Senate election, Reed defeated Tingle again retaining his seat.
Jack Reed was reelected in the 2014 and 2020 US Senate elections. He defeated rival Republicans, Mark Zaccaria and Allen Waters, respectively.
