Cindy Hyde-Smith was born on May 10th, 1959, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Her parents are Luther Hyde and Lorraine Hyde [3]. 

Cindy Hyde-Smith completed her primary education at Lawrence County Academy, located in Monticello, Mississippi. The school was notable for having a mascot named “Col. Reb” who contained the Confederate Flag as part of his design.

As a young adult, Cindy Hyde-Smith studied at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. She then attended the famous University of Southern Mississippi and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree [4].

Political Career

Cindy Hyde-Smith was a registered Democrat for many years and was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 1999. Smith went on to represent Mississippi in its 39th district until 2012 [5].

Cindy Hyde-Smith switched over to the Republican party in 2010. She states that the move was made in part by her conservative beliefs. Smith was elected Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner in 2011 before taking her position in January 2012. She was then reelected to the position in 2015 after defeating Democrat Addie Lee Green [6].

Cindy Hyde-Smith was elected to the Mississippi Senate and served from 2000 to 2012. Smith is believed to have had a conservative voting record while serving in the state Senate. The Mississippi Senate had an equal number of Democrats and Republicans after Smith made her party switch in 2010.

Cindy Hyde-Smith made her run for U.S. Senate in 2018. This was after Governor Phil Bryant publicly announced he wanted Smith to take Thad Cochran’s Senate seat. Thad Cochran resigned due to health problems in April 2018, which led to Smith taking his seat [7].

Cindy Hyde-Smith then announced she would be running for election in the 2018 special election. President Donald Trump’s administration did not support Smith initially, citing her history as a Democrat. However, he later expressed his support during a stump speech in northern Mississippi.

Smith faced Democrat Mike Espy in the general election. She declined to debate him in the weeks leading up to the election, as Cochran had done in the past. Both candidates secured 41% of the vote, leading to a special runoff election. Cindy Hyde-Smith then publicly debated Espy and won the election by earning 53.8% of the vote [8].

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith has accomplished many things as a United States Junior Senator. She was the first woman to be elected as Senator of Mississippi.

In 2017, Cindy Hyde-Smith supported President Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 [9]. Smith voted also to increase unemployment benefits raise taxes on cigarettes.

Cindy Hyde-Smith cosponsored the Transporting Livestock Across America Safety Act in July 2019. The bill was introduced by Jon Tester and Ben Sasse and aimed to reform the hours at which livestock haulers could rest during their service [10].

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith drew controversy while campaigning during her 2018 runoff election. Smith appeared with cattle rancher Colin Hutchinson and stated, “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be in the front row.” 

Many people found this statement to be controversial due to Mississippi’s dark history of publicly executing African-Americans. The Senator refused to apologize for her statement but still managed to win the runoff election [11].
