Chris Van Hollen’s Bio/Early Life
Van Hollen was born Christopher Van Hollen Jr. on 10th January 1959. His mother Edith Eliza was the chief of the CIA for South Asia. He was born in Karachi, which was then the capital of Pakistan.
His father Christopher Van Hollen worked as the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs between 1969 and 1972. He served as the US Ambassador to South Asian countries of Sri Lanka and later the Maldives between 1972 and 1976.
Van Hollen has Dutch and Irish ancestry. His early life was spent in the South Asian countries of Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.
He returned to the US and enrolled in Middlesex School where his grandfather taught in Concord, Massachusetts. After completing high school, Van Hollen attended Swarthmore College located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
Van Hollen graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1982.
In 1985, Van Hollen received a Master’s degree in Public Policy from John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. He obtained a JD degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.

Van Hollen entered politics in 1985 when he worked as the legislative assistant to US Republican Senator from Maryland Charles Mathias. He advised on defense and public policy-related matters to the senator.
In 1987, Van Hollen served as a member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. He became the legislative advisor to the Governor of Maryland William Donald Schaefer in 1989.
In 1990, Van Hollen started practicing law in Maryland joining Arent Fox law firm.
Van Hollen served in the House of Delegates in the Maryland General Assembly from 1991 till 1995. He later served in the Senate for the Health and Human Services and Budget and Taxation subcommittees.
In 2002, Van Hollen defeated Morella in the 8th congressional district elections. He was reelected in 2004 when he defeated Republican Chuck Floyd by a large majority.
Van Hollen won the 8th congressional elections in 2006 defeating Republican Jeffrey M. Stein. He was again successful in 2008 defeating Republican rival Steve Hudson.
He also won the senate elections in 2010, 2012, and 2014 defeating rival Republicans Michael L. Philips, Kenneth R. Timmerman, and Dave Wallace, respectively. In all the elections Von Hollen won by a clear majority.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Van Hollen to a Committee of Deficit Reduction in 2011.
In 2016, Van Hollen won the US Senate democratic primaries held in 2016. The same year he won the US Senate election in Maryland defeating Republican rival Kathy Szeliga with a large majority.

Van Hollen launched the tobacco tax bill when he served as the Senate on the Health and Human Services subcommittee between 1995 and 2003. [4]. Additionally, Van Hollen introduced legislation that banned outsourcing of federal jobs.
