Unlike most politicians who would find their calling for politics in later life, Debbie Stabenow decided to run for public office while still a graduate student. She was inspired to pursue a political career because a local nursing home was nearly dismantled. 

Debbie Stabenow managed to win her first election to become one of only three women at the time to join the Ingham County Board of Commissioners. 

She is credited to have played a pivotal role in the establishment of a women’s commission in Ingham County.

After serving as the chair of the board of commissioners for two years, it was time for Debbie Stabenow to pursue bigger goals. She had her sights for the state legislature and challenged Tom Holcomb, the Michigan State Representative in a primary election. 

Her policies proved to be popular among her constituents and Stabenow won the general election for the 58th House District. She served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1979 to 1990. 

Debbie Stabenow’s time in the House of Representatives was important for the Democratic Party because she was the first woman in House leadership ever to have presided over the House. 

When William A. Sederburg vacated his seat as a senator, Debbie Stabenow stepped in to take charge. She won her election campaign and took office in 1991 and served one term until 1994.

Stabenow ran in the Democratic Primary in Michigan to the Republican incumbent John Engler in the general election. Howard Wolpe, a US Congressman would win the primary with 35% of the vote. Stabenow had 30% of the vote. Despite losing to Wolpe in the democratic primary, Stabenow was selected by Wolpe to become his running mate in the election. 

The duo would lose to Engler in Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial primary because he had amassed a sizable 61% of votes. 

Stabenow ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1996 to challenge Dick Chrysler, the incumbent Republican US Congressman. Debbie Stabenow went on to defeat Chrysler with 54% of the votes. She was reelected in 1998 with 57% of the vote. Debbie served on the Science and Agriculture committees. 

Debbie had her sights for the senate and in 2000, challenged the incumbent Republican US Senator Spencer Abraham. She won the Democratic primary unopposed and went on to defeat Abraham in a fierce competition of 49.5%–48%. The difference was 67,259 votes. 

Stabenow had a smooth sailing career as a senator and has so far won three re-election bids. She was challenged by republican Michael Bouchard in 2006 but soundly defeated him by winning 57% of the votes [6]. 

In 2012, Stabenow ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and defeated Pete Hoekstra from the Republican Party with a sound majority of 59%. In 2018, she continued to dominate the polls by defeating John E. James, the republican nominee 52.3% votes. This was one of the closest Senate elections in Michigan because the margin was only 275,660 votes. 

As a senator, Debbie Stabenow became the chair of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee in 2017.
