Chris Perez started his musical career when he joined the band of his cousin Shelly Lares in 1986. He became the musical director of the band and co-wrote songs for his cousin. His guitar performance was praised and attracted the interest of A.B. Quintanilla III who was the father of the famous Latino singer Selena. He encouraged Perez to join his daughter’s band Selena y Los Dinos.

Perez became the lead guitarist for Selena y Los Dinos in 1989. But he was fired from the band by Selena’s father after he became romantically involved with the singer.

After getting fired from the group, Perez performed solo music. He secretly married Selena in 1992. Selena’s father forgave Perez and accepted him back into the band when he knew of the marriage.

The group Selena y Los Dinos was disbanded after the murder of Selena in 1995.

In 1998, Perez founded a rock group with his friends John Garza, Jesse Esquival, the former La Mafia band member Rudy Martinez, and Selena y Los Dinos keyboard player Joe Ojeda. The group was called Chris Perez Band as the guitarist had gained celebrity status due to marrying Selena.

Perez released songs about his devotion to the singer and wife Selena. His songs Resurrection, Best I Can, and Solo Tu was a hit among fans. The band released the final album in 2000.

In 2006, Perez joined Kumbia All Starz which was formed by Selena’s brother A.B. He left to create his band the Chris Perez Project in 2010. The band was formed in partnership with the Puerto Rican singer Angel Ferrer.
