Volkswagen Company History & Recent Developments

Volkswagen Company has a dark past as it was started by the Nazi Party now-defunct Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labor Front). Adolf Hitler ordered the production of a ‘people’s car’ that could be affordable to the average German. He wanted the company to manufacture cars that could transport a family of five at 62 mph (100 km/h).

The chief designer of Auto Union Erwin Komenda designed the first car –VW Type 82 which was similar in design to the VW Beetle. But soon World War II started and the company focused on manufacturing military vehicles.

After the war, the Volkswagen factory was managed by the British Army. The factory produced 1000 passenger and commercial vehicles a month by 1946. Due to production issues, the British offered the company to the US carmaker Ford for free. But the company’s president Henry Ford II, grandson of Henry Ford, rejected the offer.

The British left management of Volkswagen in 1948. It was subsequently formed as a trust owned by the State of Lower Saxony and the West German government.

Passenger Vehicle Production

Volkswagen introduced its first sedan in 1949. A year later it launched Volkswagen Type 2 which is more popularly known as the Beetle van.

In 1953, the company introduced a convertible sedan called the Volkswagen Cabriolet. The company manufactured its first sports car the VW Karmann Ghia in 1955. The same year Volkswagen of America was formed to promote its cars in the US. In addition, it had built its first overseas plant on a 32-acre land in Golden Mile in Canada.

Promotional advertising campaigns in the 1960s resulted in record sales of Volkswagen vehicles. The Beetle became the influential car of the company with 16 million sales by 1973. It broke the record of Ford Model T for product sales.

Over the years, Volkswagen introduced many popular cars such as the VW Notchback Type 3, Squareback Type III, Passat, Polo, and Golf. Today Volkswagen is by far the best selling car in Europe. The company is now focusing on electric vehicles (EVs). It announced goals of EVs comprising up to 25 percent of yearly sales by 2025.

Volkswagen Controversy
