Sherrod Campbell Brown was born on 9th November 1952. He grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. His father Charles Gauly Brown was an M.D. working in the city. He has English, Scottish, Irish, and German ancestry.

Brown attended Mansfield High School. He completed his BA in Russian studies from Yale University in 1974. In 1979, he completed his MA in education from Ohio State University. Two years later Brown completed a Master’s in Public Education degree from the same university.

In 1979, Brown married Larke Ummel. They had two children. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1987. Brown married Connie Shultz in 2004. The couple also has two children. His second wife is a Pulitzer Prize winner. She published Life Happens and His Lovely Wife in which she shared her experiences as the wife of a US senate member.

Sherrod Brown Career

Sherrod Brown taught at the Ohio State University from 1979 to 1981 after completing his studies.

Brown’s political career started during his sophomore year at Yale University. He campaigned for Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern in the 1972 elections. He won the Ohio State House election in 1974 while in his senior year at the university. Brown served as the Ohio House representative from 1974 till 1982.

Brown contested for the Ohio Secretary of State in 1982. He defeated rival Republican Dennis Kucinich in the election. Brown was reelected in 1986 when he defeated Republican Vincent C. Campanella. But he lost the seat to Republican Bob Taft in 1990.

In 1992, Sherrod Brown contested for the U.S House of Representatives from the 13th district of Ohio. He won the Democratic primary that was heavily contested. The state that traditionally leaned towards Democrats provided an easy victory to Brown over Republican Margaret R. Mueller.

Brown won the US Representative seat six times. He contested for the United States Senate seat from Ohio in 2006. He defeated Republican DeWine in the general election.

In 2012, Brown was reelected when he defeated rival Republican Mandel. Brown won again in 2018 defeating Jim Renacci of the Republican Party.

Brown became the senior US senator from Ohio in 2011. He was also considered a serious candidate for the presidential post in the 2020 election. However, he decided he would not run for the President post and remain a senator.

Sherrod Brown was an active member of the Boy Scouts. He achieved the highest ranking of Eagle Scout in 1967.[3]
