Rob Portman’s Bio/Early Life

Rob Portman was born Robert Jones Portman on 19th December 1955. He is the son of William C. Bill Portman II and Joan Portman. He has German, English, and Scots-Irish ancestry. His mother Joan was a liberal Republican that motivated him to join the party. His grandfather owned the oldest hotel in Ohio called Golden Lamb Inn.

Portman worked at Portman Equipment Company owned by his father when he was young. He completed his high school in 1974 at Cincinnati Country Day School. In 1978, he earned a BA in anthropology from Dartmouth College. He then enrolled in University of Michigan Law School earning a Juris Doctor degree in 1984. He had served as the vice president of the student senate at the university.

He married Jane Dudley soon after graduating in 1986. The couple has three children.

Rob Portman Career

Portman started work for Patton Boggs law firm after graduating. He then worked as an associate for Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP. His political career started in 1989 when he became George H. W. Bush’s White House Counsel team. He worked as the director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.

In 1993, Rob Portman contested for the United States Government Representative seat. He won both the primaries and the general election. Portman defeated attorney Lee Hornberger of the Democratic party in the elections by a clear majority.

Portman was reelected in subsequent elections for US House Representative from Ohio from 1994 to 2004. He had defeated Democrats Les Mann, Waynesville mayor Charles W. Sanders, and Thomas R. Chandler in the elections.

From 2005 to 2007, Portman worked for the George W. Bush administration. Bush appointed Portman the US Trade Representative post due to his negotiation skills. Portman initiated trade agreements and had filed an antitrust case with the WTO against Airbus for getting support from the European Union to outcompete US firm Boeing.

In 2006, President Bush nominated Portman as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. He helped draft a budget of $2.9 trillion for FY 2008. But he resigned from the post in 2007 after he criticized the allocation of resources that included a reduction in low-income housing, health care safety net, and an increase in military spending.

Portman joined Squires Sanders law firm post-white house career. He worked for the transactional and international trade practice department of the firm.

In 2010, Portman ran for the U.S Senate seat from Ohio. He won the Republican primaries and the general election. In the Senate election, Portman defeated Democratic candidate Lee Fisher.

Portman again contested for the US Senate election in 2016. He won the election defeating the Democratic party’s Ted Strickland. In 2021, Portman announced that he will not seek reelection in 2022. [3]. He stated that breaking through the gridlock in the Senate to make progress on policymaking has contributed to his decision.

Rob Portman Accomplishments

Sen. Portman has spearheaded the enactment of 126 bills into law. He has also enacted 46 amendments during his time as a senator.[4] President Obama signed 68 of the bills President Trump signed 82 of the bills introduced by Portman.

Portman is ranked second in bipartisanship score only behind Senator Susan Collins.[5] The score is created by the McCourt School for Public Policy and Lugar Center to depict the bipartisanship stance of senators.
