Rand Paul Bio/Early Life

Randal Howard Paul was on January 7th, 1963, in the city of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. His parents are Carol Paul and libertarian politician Ron Paul. 

Ron Paul is famous for being the United States representative for Texas as well as a three-time Presidential candidate. Rand was the middle child in his family. He has four siblings, Ronald Paul Jr, Robert Paul, Lori Paul Pyeatt, and Joy Paul-LeBlanc.

Randal Howard Paul was a practicing Christian in his youth. He was baptized at the Episcopal Church. Ron Paul moved to Lake Jackson in Texas with his family in 1968. Rand spent most of his youth in his city and notably attended the 1976 Republican National Convention after his father was elected to the House of Representatives [3].

Randal Howard Paul studied various Austrian economists as a teenager. He also had an interest in the literary works of libertarian author Ayn Rand. The young Paul attended Brazoswood High School and was involved with athletics such as football and swimming [4].

Randal Howard Paul later attended Baylor University between 1981 and 1984. While at Baylor University, he joined the Young Conservatives of Texas. He also gained admission into the Duke University School of Medicine and dropped out of Baylor University before completing his studies. Paul graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1988 before completing his residency in 1993 [5].

Rand Paul then moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he began practicing as a physician. He specialized in performing glaucoma surgeries, cataract surgeries, corneal transplants, and LASIK procedures.

Political Career

Rand Paul held an interest in politics from an early age. He volunteered to help with his father’s Libertarian presidential campaign in 1988 while studying at the Duke University School of Medicine. He also founded the North Carolina Taxpayers Union and Kentucky Taxpayers United in the early 90s [6].

Rand Paul then managed his father’s congressional campaign in 1996 and helped him return to the House after a decade-long absence.

Rand Paul announced his bid to run for the United States Senate in August 2009 [7]. He then ran a “moneybomb” campaign and managed to raise $433,509 in just 24 hours. Following this, he ran many other fundraising campaigns. 

Rand Paul won the Republican Senatorial primary on May 18th, 2010, beating his opponent by a 23% margin. He then went on to face Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway and defeated him by securing 56% of the vote in the general election. He was sworn into the Senate on January 5th, 2011.

Senator Rand Paul Accomplishments 

Senator Rand Paul has accomplished many things in his life. He founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, which provided eye surgeries for patients who could not afford to pay [8].

As Senator, he spoke against the reauthorization of Section 215 of the Patriot Act for ten and a half hours in 2015. This effectively prevented the section of the Patriot Act from being reauthorized [9].

Senator Rand Paul Criticisms

Senator Rand Paul has faced much criticism during his career.  The Kentucky Senator was accused of plagiarizing part of a speech from Wikipedia in October 2013 [10].

In September 2020, he voted against a COVID-19 aid package introduced by Senate leader Mitch McConnell [11].

Senator Rand Paul was also criticized for publicly stating he would not get the COVID-19 vaccine in September 2021 [12].
