John Kennedy was born on November 21, 1951, in Centreville, Mississippi. He had a penchant for excellent grades and graduated from Zachary High School as a co-valedictorian before attending Vanderbilt University to study political science and economics. 

Like many senators and future leaders, John Neely Kennedy displayed his leadership prowess early on and was even elected to serve as president of his class and named to Phi Beta Kappa. 

He went on to attend the University of Virginia School of Law where he received a Juris Doctor  The senator also attended Magdalen College, Oxford where he received a Bachelor of Civil Degree with first class honors in 1979. John Kennedy was under the tutelage of John H.C. Morris and Sir Rupert Cross.

Outside of his political career, Kennedy has also authored numerous books including Louisiana State Constitutional Law, the Dimension of Time in the Louisiana Products Liability Act, and a Primer on Louisiana a Products Liability Act.  

He pursued a highly successful career as an attorney and became a partner in the law firm Chaffe McCall. Kennedy also had a calling as a teacher and served as an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University for 14 years. 

He also founded a local Methodist church in Madisonville.  

Despite sharing the same last name as President Kennedy, Senator John N. Kennedy has no connection with the Kennedy Family, this includes Kennedy Family Members such as Joe Kennedy of Massachusetts.

John Kennedy started his career as a special counsel to Governor Buddy Roemer in 1988. He started an unsuccessful campaign for state attorney general as a Democratic Candidate to succeed William J. Guste. 

After his brief career in politics, Kennedy started to practice law again until 1996, when he was appointed as Secretary of the state Department of Revenue under Governor Mike Foster. This time, his career in politics would be more successful. 

After leaving the Foster administration, Kennedy was elected as the State Treasurer for Louisiana in 1999. He defeated Ken Duncan in a very close contest. 

His stint as a treasurer proved to be so successful that he was re-elected to the same position, unopposed, three times in 2003, 2007, and 2011. 2015 was a different time for John Kennedy because he had a challenger – but Senator Kennedy managed to win with 80% of the total votes cast.

He served two of the five terms as a democrat, switching his affiliation to the Republican Party in 2007.
