Big Daddy Kane’s Early Life and Career

Big Daddy Kane was born on September 10, 1968 in New York City. His brother is also a rapper named Lil Daddy Shane [4]. He became interested in music at an early age and became friends with American rapper Biz Markie in 1984[5]. The two would go on to partner up and Kane would write some of Markie’s best-known lyrics[6]. 

The two became important members of Queen’s-based Juice Crew[7], which was a collective headed by Marley Marl, a renowned music producer[8]. In 1987, he signed with Cold Chillin’ Records[9]. It was during this time that he coined his pseudonym, Big Daddy Kane.

Kane became known for his ability to syncopate over fast hip-hop beats. This was especially impressive considering his asthmatic condition[10]. He soon became recognized as an early pioneer of fast rhyming in rap. He also became known as “King Asiatic Nobody’s Equal” in the 1990s[11]. 

He released his first album in 1988 called Long Live the Kane[12] which featured perhaps his most famous single “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’”[13]. He released his second album in 1989 called It’s a Big Daddy Thing[14].  

Further success followed in the 90s when he won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Back on the Block[15]. He shared the award with veteran musician Quincy Jones. 

He also worked in films briefly including the 1993 western, Posse[16], and the superhero comedy film The Meteor Man[17]. 

He stopped producing original albums after the early 2000s and went on an indefinite hiatus. He appeared on several other musician’s albums in the 2000s including
