Ben Cardin Bio/Early Life

Benjamin Louis Cardin was born on October 5th, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. His family’s name was originally “Kardonsky”, as his grandparents were Russian. Ben Cardin ethnicity is white American. His father, Meyer Cardin, was part of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1935 to 1937 [3] .

Ben Cardin’s religion also follows that of his parents. He attended the Modern Orthodox Beth Tfiloh Congregation. The young Cardin studied at City College High School and graduated in 1961. He then studied at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 [4]. 

He then married his current wife, Myrna Edelman Cardin. Cardin then studied at the University of Maryland School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1967.

Political Career

Ben Cardin was elected into the Maryland House of Delegates while studying in law school in 1966 [5]. He obtained the seat that his uncle, Maurice Cardin, had once held.

Ben Cardin then became chairman in the Ways & Means Committee. He served in this position from 1974 to 1979. Cardin then became the 103rd Speaker of the House before finally leaving office [6].

Ben Cardin developed an interest in joining the United States House of Representatives in 1986. Cardin ran following Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski’s announcement that she would be running for the United States Senate.

Ben Cardin managed to secure the Democratic nomination by receiving 82% of the vote. He then defeated Republican Ross Z. Pierpont in the general election by securing 79% of the vote.

Ben Cardin was heavily liked by the people of Maryland. He was reelected a whopping nine times and ran unopposed in the 1992 elections.

Ben Cardin developed an interest in joining the United States Senate in 2005. He battled against other Democrats in the primaries in 2006. Cardin won election with 44% of the vote. He then faced Republican Michael Steele and defeated him by getting 54% of the votes.

Ben Cardin ran for reelection in 2012 and was challenged by Democrat C. Anthony Muse. Cardin beat Muse by securing 74% of the votes. He then faced Republican Dan Bongino, Independent Rob Sobhani, and Libertarian Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad in the general election. Cardin won with 56% of the vote, thereby retaining his Senate seat.

Senator Ben Cardin has many accomplishments under his belt as a House and Senate member. He was involved with reforming Maryland’s school financing and property tax system. He also proposed legislation for welfare reform.

Cardin voted for the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. This act placed sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea [7]. 

Cardin voted to pass the Hire More Heroes Act of 2015. Senator Ben Cardin was also awarded the Order of the Star of Romania in 2017 [8].

Senator Ben Cardin’s career has remained largely free from controversy. However, he is a liberal Senator and has been the target of multiple attacks from Republicans. 

Jerome Segal, his opponent in the 2018 Senate elections, criticized Cardin for his poor performance as a Senator. In his campaign, he pointed out that Maryland is the richest state in America but that Baltimore had the sixth-highest crime rate of any American city [9].
